The abalone shell is the universal *altar vessel* across most folk and ritual traditions — Catholic, Indigenous American, neo-pagan, Hoodoo, Shinto. It catches the ash from incense or smudge bundles, it holds salt water for cleansing, it cradles small offerings, it props up a candle, it serves as the receiving bowl for whatever the work needs received. The iridescent inside (mother-of-pearl) shifts color in candlelight in a way that feels alive. The outside is rough, scarred, oceanic. They are inexpensive — fifteen dollars on Amazon for a large natural shell — and they last forever. Sinderella keeps two: one on the folding table where she reads (catches the cigarette ash and the spent matches when she lights candles), one by the front door of the back room with a small mound of sea salt in it (folk-Catholic protection). Cleanse periodically by rinsing under cold running water, then drying thoroughly (the natural shell will discolor if left wet). The 'large' size — about 5-6 inches across — is the practical workhorse. Pair with the rosemary bundle (catches the ash) and the brass candleholders (the shell sits between them on the altar).
