Crystal gazing — scrying — is one of the oldest divination practices in the world. The Aztecs used polished obsidian mirrors. John Dee used a black obsidian 'showstone.' Celtic seers used water in dark bowls. Romani fortune tellers kept a crystal ball on every traveling table. The practice is the same across traditions: gaze into a reflective surface and allow the mind to enter a receptive state where images and impressions arise that ordinary waking attention suppresses.
