A black skull candle, sinner — and don't do the raised-eyebrow thing. Sicilian death awareness isn't performative goth. It's honest. The skull says: *you are going to die and so is everyone you love, so stop wasting the evening.* Light it on All Souls'. Light it the night you finally stop pretending something is alive that isn't. *Madonn',* it's just a candle. The honesty is the whole point.

The long version

The skull figural candle is standard stock at every botanica from New Orleans to the South Bronx. Black wax, skull-shaped, sometimes marked with Santa Muerte symbols or left plain. The form has been in active folk Catholic and Hoodoo practice for over a century — memento mori as a working tool, not a Halloween accessory. Sinderella keeps one on the table in November (All Souls' through the end of the month) and lights one at the start of any reading that involves something the person needs to officially let die — a relationship that's legally over but not emotionally, a plan that stopped being viable six months ago, a belief about someone that protecting has started to cost more than it's worth. The skull is not about hexing or harm. It's about *acknowledgment.* You can't grieve something you're still pretending is alive. The skull says: this thing is gone. Light the candle. Do the acknowledgment. Let the wax burn down. Set it in the abalone shell or on a ceramic plate. Saint Gertrude (patron of the recently dead) for the acknowledgment. Santa Muerte for the ones who know what they're doing.
